Shillelagh village was planned
as part of the FitzWilliam estate in the 17th century.
Nearby Coolattin House (designed by John Carr and built
around 1800) was the seat of the Fitzwilliam Estate.
The village has attractive
terrace stone houses and a handsome courthouse with a clock
tower. Tomnafinnoge Oak Forest is one of the largest
standing oak forests in the country and is a remnant of the
great oak forests that were stripped during the 16th and
17th centuries. Tomnafinnoge is now the largest remaining
oak forest in Ireland. One of only two Cork Oaks in Ireland
exists here. The famous Irish weapon that was made from
blackthorn sticks, 'The Shillelagh' originates from this
village. Coolattin Golf Club is located just outside the
village. |
